Must Have Hairstyle: Feather Crowned Goddess Braid
Hair braids are kind of a big deal. From the beach, to a music festival, to the red carpet, braids are the must-have hair style of spring and summer. There are as many types of hair braids as there are places to wear them, outfits to go with them and moods to flaunt them.
Since there’s a hair braid to match any personality or occasion, braids are the perfect hair style to showcase your feathers and accompany your Fine Featherheads feather hair extension, Fly Ties or Quill Clips.

Love this look? Want to try yourself? Well here’s how…
Step 1: Gather a small section of hair on one side to begin the inside-out braid.
Step 2: Continue weaving the sections of hair under the braid.
Step 3: Continue braiding down the side of the head.
Step 4: Braid until you reach the center of the back of the head.
Step 5: Securely bobby pin the braid to the center.
Step 6: Begin the inside-out braid on the opposite side.
Step 7: Continue braiding until you meet the other braid at the back.
Step 8: Securely pin the braids together.
Curl as needed!

Stay tuned for more awesome hair tutorials…

Coachella 2012 was of course all about music and art…but our eyes and ears on the festival grounds were totally obsessed with something else:
the festival fashion.

The #1 must-have accessory on the polo fields this year:
feathers—in all colors, shapes, and sizes.

We loved these rainbow inspired hair feathers, which remind us of our Rainbow Bright Original Featherheads feather hair extensions. Same bright and shiny tones of yellow and pink!

Feathers made the ultimate boho fashion statement—in hair as feather extensions, but also as feather charms, feather accents and
stylish feather earrings:

The other must-have fashion trend we loved at Coachella this year: braided hair! It’s the most stylish way to wear your hair while leaving the rest of you free to sing, dance, party and enjoy the music all day and night!

Another way to make sure you and your hair are ready to dance the night away is to use our cute Fly Ties! They were perfect for all Featherheads out there at Coachella who wanted to pull back their hair without damaging their feather extensions. They also make amazing fashion statements when worn as bracelets!

With a long list of festivals on the horizon this summer, make sure you’re ready with ultimate in boho festival fashion.

See you at the next festival!

In commemoration of a special day meant to honor our Earth and promote environmental awareness and action, we’ve decided to share with you some of the initiatives we’re taking here at Fine Featherheads. It’s important for us to make a positive impact on our local and global community in any way we can, and we’re excited to share our ideas with you.

1 % for the Planet - We’re members!
1% for the Planet exists to build and support an alliance of businesses financially committed to creating a healthy planet. Started by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of Blue Ribbon Flies, 1% FTP is a growing global movement of 1,497 companies that donate 1% of their total sales to a network of 2,839 environmental organizations worldwide. We are very proud to be one of the companies making a difference.

Native Energy - We’re Carbon Negative!
We partnered with Native Energy to reduce our green house gas emissions and build a stronger, more sustainable brand. NativeEnergy’s Help Build™ carbon offsets directly fund new carbon projects—from wind farms to methane digesters and beyond. As a partner, our purchase plays a crucial role in the development of the project that produces your carbon offsets. With exceptional social and environmental benefits, these projects reduce greenhouse gas emissions and support local communities.

Eco-Cycle - We’re working towards zero waste!
Eco-Cycle is one of the largest non-profit recyclers in the USA and has an international reputation as a pioneer and innovator in resource conservation. They were created 35 years ago by everyday residents who had a passionate belief in conserving our natural resources. These Eco-Cycle volunteers brought recycling to town in 1976, making Boulder, Colorado one of the first 20 communities in the U.S. to offer curbside recycling. They continue to be driven by these same passions and innovative actions today. It is such an honor to be working with such a passionate company, and we are really excited about working towards becoming zero-waste. If you take a tour of the Fine Feather Headquarters you will see a large recycling bin, a compost bin and a small trash bin in each room. We spend time to educate our staff about properly disposing of our waste, and we are proud of the progress we’ve made. Eco-cycle makes our job very simple and even pays the office educational visits. Who knew waste could be so fun?!

Recyclable Packaging
While our current packaging is recyclable, our new packaging will be fair trade and made from invasive plant fibers. We are extremely excited to be partnering with Distant Village for our new packaging – coming out this summer!

You don’t have to be a business to give back, you don’t even have to donate money. There are many simple things you can do to make a difference, and here’s what we suggest:
Bring your own bags to the grocery store.
Carry your own water bottle to help eliminate plastic waste.
Bring a re-usable mug to the coffee shop.
Wash and re-use your sandwich bags.
Bike/Walk/Bus-it to work. If this doesn’t seem realistic, try it once a week.
Host clothing swaps with friends to fulfill your shopping fix.
Less Consumption = Less Stuff = Less Waste
One person can make a difference, and each person adds up to the whole. The things you do and the decisions you make influence those around, so make smart choices.
In the words of wise leader, “Be the Change you Wish to See in the World.” – Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi

Fine Featherheads is very excited to partner with Tricks & Ginger, a small local Colorado company, owned by two female friends, that create hand-made, re-purposed leather and lace jewelry. T&G is a young company with lots of creativity and enthusiasm, and this is just the kind of business we enjoy working with – gotta keep those creative juices flowing! We are honored to be able to offer a selection of their one-of-a-kind pieces in our retail store.
Whether you’re looking for earrings with a feminine pop of color, or a delicate necklace to accent to an otherwise plain outfit,
T&G has got you covered.

We specialize in one of a kind leather and lace pieces that straddle both bold and delicate, capturing the duality often found within the individual and our worldly surroundings. We take pride in the fact that our pieces are obviously made with two hands and not a machine; this is a labor of love and we appreciate the opportunity to stand behind our work and interact with the people wearing/using our products. - Tricks & Ginger

As our relationship with T&G continues to grow, we want to share their story with you, to help you get to know the creative minds (Ricki & Darcy) behind the brand. We sat down with these lovely ladies and asked them some questions and this is what we discovered…
FFH: How and when did you two meet?
D: Who says you can’t meet anyone meaningful at a bar? Ricki and I were both bartending at Mezcal, a tequila bar on Colfax [in Denver, Colorado], and this is where our friendship first took roots.
FFH: When did you personally start creating jewelry?
R: I began working for Philip Crangi, a Manhattan based jewelry designer, right out of college in 2004, and began making some pieces here and there on the side. Although his jewelry, and the jewelry I was personally making at that time, is very different than T&G, that’s when I got my first taste of this business – and I loved it!
D: I have been wearing my own creations and calling them jewelry ever since lanyards at summer camp, but in college I began creating things that other people would want to wear as well.
FFH: When was it that you decided you wanted to start creating jewelry together?
D&R: At the very end of summer 2011. It didn’t take us long after meeting to realize that we wanted to start a business together. I think when we got tired of constantly complimenting each other’s rockin style!
FFH: What are your other creative outlets?
R: I have a degree in painting. That is my first love. I also like to knit/crochet, cook, and am currently folding 1,000 paper cranes for my wedding in September. I find all of it very relaxing and exciting at the same time.
D: Painting, graphic/web design, the banjo, sewing…Dance!
FFH: What inspires you personally?
R: Nature. Man (and woman!) works so hard to recreate the beauty that is found all around us…much of our work has natural elements, including our lace dying process that is done with only fruits and veggies.
D: The simple joy I feel while in the throws of a crafting adventure!
FFH: What inspired you to use the materials you use? Where did the idea of using old airplane seats or bridal lace come from?
R: As a designer, I have a difficult time reconciling my desire to create vs. my awareness of all the “stuff” that already exists out in the world. T&G is committed to using all recycled/up-cycled goods, because that way, it feels like we are turning discarded materials into beautiful objects rather than creating a demand for production. For example, all of our leather goods are recycled. We find scraps and incorporate them into various pieces of our work. We are taking something that is a would-be throw away and using it to suit our needs. That’s why no two pieces of ours are alike. It is more important to us to maintain our business practices than it is to create 50 pieces that are all the same. We value the uniqueness of our pieces and hope our customers do, too!
D: Honestly…feathers! I loved the flow. I loved the lightness. I wanted to do something different and that’s how the idea of using lace came onto the scene. We use antique bridal lace because it is vintage and one of a kind.
The airplane seat bracelets weren’t planned. It is very important to us to carefully consider the environmental and social impacts of the materials we use, which is why, when we use leather, it comes strictly from scrap leather, discarded odds and ends from upholstery, saddle makers, airplane seats, etc.
FFH: Where do you gather your materials?
D: All over! Ricki and I love exploring new markets, shops, antique malls, dumpsters…
FFH: Biggest challenge as a designer?
D: Sticking with one design and duplicating it…I always want to try something new.
FFH: Biggest challenge in owning your own business?
R: Well, since we work mostly out of my apt, I think the biggest challenge is telling myself to stop for the day….time to go to bed!
FFH: What part is the most fun? Designing? Seeing people get excited?
R: Is it annoying to say all of it? I love working in the apt with Darcy, listening to music, creating new things. But I also love when we set up our display at a festival and get to talk and interact with people. It is so important to hear what people think, and I really enjoy the interaction.
D: Creating, definitely. Hanging out with my friend, listening to good music and making cool stuff.
FFH: Favorite piece created? Who owns it?
R: My favorite piece is the very first buckle necklace we created. I wear it almost every day, and it reminds me of how far we’ve come!
D: A simple recycled leather bracelet. Long and skinny and wraps around the wrist a bunch of times with an awesome one of a kind mini buckle from the 1920’s. Its just cool. My good friend Katie owns her, which is great, because I get to see my baby all the time!
FFH: What are your goals? Where would you like to see T&G in 1 year?
R: I’d love to see T&G progress on the path that we’ve been on, meaning, I’d love to continue showing our work at festivals, local markets/stores and with FFH, of course! However, keeping things at a manageable pace is important to us. Darcy and I care so much about each piece we make, we will never allow ourselves to grow to a scale of mass production.. because…well, what’s the fun in that? We want to be successful, but be able to maintain our current business practices. We will never compromise quality for the sake of larger volume!
D: I’d love to cruise around Denver and randomly spot girls on the street rocking our stuff.
FFH: What do you do for fun (non-jewelry related)?
R: I love seeing live music…especially at Red Rocks (duh!) and hanging with my dog.
D: Listen to good live music. Spend time outside. Travel to mysterious and exciting places.
FFH: Favorite Starburst color?
R: PINK
D: Orange
FFH: Favorite ice cream flavor?
R: Mint chocolate chip
D: Plain tart…hahaha, Does yogurtland count?
FFH: If someone were to write a book about you, what would the title be?
R: That’s a tough one! I’m going to steal a song title from one of my favorite bands (The 6ths): All Dressed Up In Dreams
D: Messy Cars, Mismatching Socks, and Dirty Feet: The Disarray of Darcy Kahn
FFH: Hot or cold?
R: HOT
D: Cold
FFH: Best advice you’ve ever been given?
R: Never drink anything blue.
D: If you have a wedgie….pick it!
Nuff Said.

Here at Fine Featherheads, we share an enthusiasm for many things, but one thing in particular is our passion for food. Whether it be Taryn’s infamous mouth-watering lemon bars or Aiesha’s incredible Indian cuisine, we’re often exchanging recipes and hosting office parties. I’m a big fan of “family-style potluck” dinners where a theme is declared and everyone brings a dish to share. We’ve had a blast doing this and recipe exchanging spreads like wildfire.
In effort to cook more at home I decided to give a recipe a try that caught my eye from the March addition of SHAPE Magazine. The Recipe of the Month featured a veggie burger from a restaurant called The Counter in Culver City, CA. Executive Chef Marc Boussarie constructs a healthy flavorful veggie burger that will keep any meat lover satisfied and coming back for more.

The quest for the perfect veggie burger is a journey I’ve been on for many years. After giving Chef Boussarie’s veggie burger a try, I must say that this recipe is AMAZING and exactly what I look for in a veggie burger. This recipe is going into my personal collection of recipes and will be made again and again.
In my opinion the perfect veggie burger is one that:
1. tastes homemade — slightly crispy on the outside and warm and rich on the inside.
2. has the perfect balance of flavor — finely chopped veggies, so that none stand out awkwardly. A proper blend of seasoning and spicy flavors, but neither one over powering the other.
3. it doesn’t fall apart mid bite — although if does, this is a perfect opportunity to go bunless and top a salad with veggie burger crumbles – YUMMY TOO!!
4. filling enough to satisfy any meat eater

Here’s the recipe that comes the closest I’ve seen to hitting the nail on the head:
Serves: 6
Prep Time: 15
Cook Time: 16 mins (plus 1 hour resting)
Ingredients:
4 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 onion, diced
3 garlic cloves, minced
2 carrots, peeled and grated
1 yellow squash, grated
1 zucchini, grated
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup canned black beans, rinsed and drained
1 egg, beaten
1 teaspoon paprika
2 tablespoons chopped Italian parsley
1 1/2 cups rolled oats
all-purpose flour (for dusting)
4 multigrain buns
1/2 cup mixed greens (optional)
1. Heat 2 teaspoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add onion and reduce heat to medium. Add the garlic and saute for 3 to 4 mins, until soft. Mix in carrots, squash, zucchini, salt, and pepper. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes more, or until soft. Mix in black beans, egg, paprika, parsley, and oats. Remove from heat, transfer to a bowl, and let rest at room temperature for 1 hour.
2. Divide the mixture into 6 equal parts and form each into a flattened, round patty. Lightly coat each side with flour.
3. Heat remaining 2 teaspoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high. Add patties and cook for 3 to 4 mins on each side, or until golden brown.
4. Serve on multigrain buns topped with mixed greens, if desired.
Nutrition score per serving (1 burger):
291 calories, 8g fat (1 saturated), 48g carbs, 12g protein, 8 g fiber, 80mg calcium, 3mg iron, 577mg sodium

The fun thing about veggie burgers is that you can change up the flavor just by changing up the toppings. Here are a few Fine Featherheads suggestions to enhance your veggie burger.
Classic LTO with an elegant twist: arugula, goat cheese, caramelized onions and heirloom tomatoes
Spicy Mama: jalapenos, pepper-jack cheese, sauteed green chilies
Heady: avocado, swiss cheese and sprouts
Aloha: grilled pineapple and teriyaki sauce
Then there are the sauces, which we could write a whole other blog on (maybe we will). You can add flavor to your veggie burger by adding garlic aoli, basil pesto, spicy brown mustard, bbq sauce, veganiase, braggs and many many more.
You can wrap the patties and refrigerate them for up to two days, or freeze them for up to three months. Then you’ll have them on hand for a quick and easy meal. This recipe is a great way to squeeze more veggies into your diet and get creative. This recipe is definitely one to try. It will leave any meat eater coming back for more and walking away feeling fully satiated. Promise.

Over this past year the staff here at Fine Featherheads has been jet-setting all over the world spreading the Feather Love to many new Featherheads from London, Hong Kong, Japan, Costa Rica, Brazil and soon Australia! It has been a great honor to showcase our products and brand at world-renowned hair shows like Salon International, Cosmoprof Asia, Beautyworld, Hair Brasil and soon Hair Expo Australia. It was on our trip to Cosmoprof in Hong Kong, last fall that we met Zanik Hair Design salon owner, Sandy Mackie. It was awesome to meet an Australian native at a show in Hong Kong and we were overjoyed by her enthusiasm for our products. Clearly, she knows a hot item when she sees one, as she purchased several packs for her salon that day.

Zanik Hair Designs, located in Camberwell, Victoria Australia, has been in business for 27 years and is best known for their excellent customer service, great work, attention to detail, and always offering the hottest new products. The stylists who make up the team have all been employed at Zanik for an average of eight years – this kind of loyalty only comes from loving what you do and working in a respectful, nurturing environment. Zanik takes great pride in encouraging it’s staff to grow with the business and expand their skill set, to be able to offer the very best to their clients. Zanik’s staff and client base is a very close knit family, and this energy creates a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere for both new and old clients. Sandy and Ivan are the owners at Zanik, with almost 60 years of experience between the two of them! With Ivan’s area of expertise in creating the perfect cut, and Sandy as the head colorist, they are a diverse and talented duo. To learn more about Zanik’s ROCKSTAR team click here.
Offering a wide variety of services, tiered pricing (depending on stylist’s level) and discounted rates for students, there’s something for everyone at Zanik – They even offer special rates for children under the age of 12!
Recently we reconnected with Sandy to check in and see how the feathers are doing at her salon…
FFH: What age/demographic is your most common client?
Z: Our clientele ranges in age from 2 to 60′s. (we love this!)
FFH: What has been your most popular service/product?
Z: At the moment I can’t believe how much hype the feathers have created! Usually we get business driven by new hair colours and foil placement but the feathers do that on their own and at a fraction of the time!
FFH: When did you first start using Fine Featherheads’ products in your salon?
Z: We first introduced the feathers in November 2011 after I brought them back from Hong Kong.
FFH: What has been your experience since you started offering Feathers?
Z: Since having the feathers, the salon has experienced the most positive feedback. People love them. They have been the talk around our area!
FFH: Who is getting Fine Featherheads?
Z: All ages are having them but of course the teenagers by far are getting the most. We recommend some feathers instead of harmful hair dye and the mums love that!
FFH: What Fine Featherheads product lines do you offer and which are most popular?
Z: The Originals and Wispers are the most popular and they love the blue, purple and pastel colours. Naturals work well for the girls that are still at school. Our private schools here are a little strict with hair. My staff love the pastels and black tie and they sell just from my girls wearing them.
FFH: What kind of marketing/advertising are you doing for your salon/feathers?
Z: We have the posters and advertising on our board out front of shop and on our website and Facebook page.
For more tips and tricks to advertise for your business through social media (for FREE) please visit our blog.
Do you want your salon to be featured on our blog? Please send an email to info@finefeatherheads.com and tell us about your salon and your experience with our products.
